RK Steel Windows & Doors: what you need to know

What RK Steel is

RK Steel makes steel windows and doors, for both internal and external use. Steel lets frames be exceptionally slender, giving the crisp, gridded look associated with classic steel glazing. RK Steel is one of the main brands we supply and fit.

Who it suits

Steel suits homeowners who want a distinctive architectural look: period-style properties, contemporary renovations, kitchens with an industrial feel and internal screens that divide space while keeping light.

When it's the right choice

Choose steel when the look of the frame matters as much as the glass. Steel works well where you want thin glazing bars and a strong, defined grid.

Why professional fitting matters

Steel frames are heavy and precise. They must be fixed square and true so doors swing cleanly and windows seal. Our fitters handle steel as well as aluminium.

The cost of waiting

What happens if you leave it

Getting steel glazing wrong is costly because the product is precise and made to order.

Wrong measurements

Steel is made to measure. An inaccurate survey means a frame that doesn't fit.

Poor sealing externally

External steel windows and doors need proper sealing to keep weather out.

Misaligned doors

Heavy steel doors that aren't hung true can drop and catch.

Common mistakes we see

  • Choosing a grid pattern without considering the view through it.
  • Measuring internal openings before finishes are complete.
  • Mixing steel with mismatched hardware elsewhere.
  • Using a fitter unfamiliar with steel profiles.

In detail

Options, materials and methods

Everything worth knowing before your survey, so you can make a confident decision.

Internal steel doors and screens

Internal steel doors and screens split up open-plan spaces while letting light through. They're popular between kitchens and living rooms and at the foot of stairs.

External steel windows and doors

External steel windows and doors bring the same slender look to the outside of the house, giving period and contemporary homes a distinctive finish.

Glazing patterns

The grid of glazing bars is part of the design. We'll talk through patterns that suit your room and view.

Steel or aluminium

Steel gives the slimmest classic profile; aluminium is lighter and often suits larger openings. We supply both and we'll help you decide.

Where steel works best in a home

Steel glazing is at its best where people will see it up close: between a kitchen and a living room, at the bottom of a staircase, as a screen across a hallway, or as an external door onto a courtyard. Because the frames are so slender, a steel screen divides a room without making it feel smaller. Many customers use one internal steel screen as the centrepiece of a renovation and keep the rest of the joinery simple around it.

Planning internal steel screens

An internal screen can be a single door, a pair of doors, a door with fixed side panels, or a full-height wall of glass with a door set into it. The grid pattern of the glazing bars should line up with features in the room, such as worktop height, ceiling line or a kitchen island. At survey we'll look at these sight lines with you so the finished screen looks deliberate rather than dropped in.

Period and contemporary homes

Steel windows have a long history, which is why they suit older properties so well, but the same slim profiles also look sharp in contemporary extensions with plain render and large open rooms. The difference is in the details: grid layout, colour and hardware. We'll talk through which details suit the age and style of your house.

Combining steel with aluminium

Some homes use RK Steel inside and aluminium for larger external openings such as bi-folds or sliders. That approach keeps the steel look where it has the most impact and uses aluminium where very large panels are needed. Because we supply and fit both, we can plan the two together so colours and lines are consistent.

Before your free survey

To get the most from your survey, have a think about a few things beforehand: how you use the room day to day, the look you're aiming for, any colours or finishes you already like, and whether other building or decorating work is planned. Photos of styles you like are useful too. None of this is essential, as we'll guide you through every choice, but it helps us give you a precise rk steel windows & doors quote in a single visit.

What our customers tell us matters

Our one Facebook recommendation so far describes the installation as done professionally, fitted neatly, with a friendly and efficient team. That's exactly what we aim for on every job: turning up when we say we will, protecting your home while we work, fitting carefully, and leaving the room clean. If you've had work done by us, we'd be grateful for a Google review.

Paying for your project

We keep payment simple and transparent. A 65% deposit is taken to order your products from the manufacturer, and the balance is due on the day of completion, once the job is finished. We don't publish prices, because every home is different. Get in touch for a quote. Your written quote will show exactly what you're paying for.

Choosing a brand

We supply and fit products from manufacturers rather than making our own, which means we can recommend what genuinely suits your home. Origin aluminium is our best seller and carries a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. RK Steel is our main steel brand, for internal and external windows and doors. We also supply Palladio and Bel'M. At survey we'll explain the differences in plain terms.

Understanding the guarantee

Because we don't manufacture, the guarantee on your product is the manufacturer's guarantee, and it varies by brand. Origin products carry a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. For other brands, we'll confirm the guarantee for your specific product in writing with your quote, so there are no surprises later.

Getting an accurate quote

Every opening is different, so we don't publish prices. The fastest route to a firm figure is a free survey: we measure, check the condition of the opening and talk through the finish, glazing and hardware you want. You'll get a written quote listing exactly what's included before you decide anything.

Homes we work on

Our customers are mainly households: replacements in existing homes, renovations, extensions and self-builds. P Black and Son supplies products from manufacturers and fits them, so you deal with one team from first visit to final handover.
