Overview

Double Glazing Unit Replacement: what you need to know

White Georgian-bar window with new double glazed units in a red brick wall, Northern Ireland

What unit replacement is

A double glazing unit is the sealed pair of panes inside your window frame. When the seal fails, moisture gets in and the unit mists. Replacing just the unit restores clear glass without replacing the frame.

Who it's for

Anyone whose frames are in good shape but whose glass has misted, cracked or blown.

When it's needed

When you see condensation between the panes, a crack, or a unit that no longer keeps the cold out.

Why professional help matters

Units must be measured accurately and fitted into the frame securely so the window stays weathertight.

The cost of waiting

What happens if you leave it

A failed unit doesn't fix itself.

Misting gets worse

Once the seal fails, moisture builds and the glass stays cloudy.

Heat loss

A failed unit loses much of its insulating ability.

Cracks spread

A cracked pane can worsen and become a safety risk.

Common mistakes we see

  • Replacing whole windows when only the glass has failed.
  • Ordering units without accurate measurements.
  • Ignoring a cracked pane until it breaks.
  • Trying DIY removal and damaging the frame.

In detail

Options, materials and methods

Everything worth knowing before your survey, so you can make a confident decision.

Windows and doors

We replace units in windows and glazed doors.

Glass options

Clear, obscure and other glass types are available. We'll advise at survey.

Frames worth keeping

If your frames are in good condition, unit replacement is usually the sensible option. If they're not, we'll tell you honestly.

Signs your unit has failed

The most obvious sign is condensation or a milky film between the two panes that you can't wipe away from either side. Other signs are a draught you can feel near the glass, a crack in one pane, or a window that feels noticeably colder than the others in the same room. Any of these mean the sealed unit needs replacing.

Replace the glass, keep the window

Replacing a failed unit is often far less disruptive and less costly than replacing a whole window. The frame stays in place; the old unit is removed and a new one, made to your measurements, is fitted in its place. If we find the frame itself has had its day, we'll tell you honestly and explain the options.

Obscure and specialist glass

Bathrooms, front doors and side panels often use obscure glass for privacy. When replacing a unit we can match or change the glass type, so you can take the opportunity to improve privacy or brighten a room.

How quickly can it be done?

Units are made to size after we measure. We'll tell you the timescale with your quote and agree a fitting date when your unit is ready. If a pane is cracked, tell us when you call so we can advise on keeping the window safe in the meantime.

Before your free survey

To get the most from your survey, have a think about a few things beforehand: how you use the room day to day, the look you're aiming for, any colours or finishes you already like, and whether other building or decorating work is planned. Photos of styles you like are useful too. None of this is essential, as we'll guide you through every choice, but it helps us give you a precise double glazing unit replacement quote in a single visit.

What our customers tell us matters

Our one Facebook recommendation so far describes the installation as done professionally, fitted neatly, with a friendly and efficient team. That's exactly what we aim for on every job: turning up when we say we will, protecting your home while we work, fitting carefully, and leaving the room clean. If you've had work done by us, we'd be grateful for a Google review.

Paying for your project

We keep payment simple and transparent. A 65% deposit is taken to order your products from the manufacturer, and the balance is due on the day of completion, once the job is finished. We don't publish prices, because every home is different. Get in touch for a quote. Your written quote will show exactly what you're paying for.

Why choose Coleraine Glass

Coleraine Glass is the glass side of P Black and Son. Because we already supply and fit windows and doors across Northern Ireland, we measure, order and fit glass with the same care: accurate surveys, glass made to the size of your space, and a tidy finish. You deal with a local team based in Coleraine, not a call centre.

How to get an accurate quote

The fastest way to a firm price is a short call or message telling us what you need, the room it's for and roughly how big the area is. Photos help. We then arrange a free survey to measure properly, because glass is made to size and an accurate measurement is what makes it fit first time. You'll get a written quote before anything is ordered.

Planning around building work

If you're renovating, book the survey once walls, floors and worktops are finished. Measuring too early is the most common reason glass doesn't fit. If you're unsure of timing, call us and we'll tell you when to book the visit so your glass arrives ready to go in as soon as the room is ready.

Looking after your glass

Glass is one of the easiest surfaces in the home to keep clean. A soft cloth and a non-abrasive glass cleaner is all most jobs need. Avoid scouring pads and harsh chemicals, which can mark the surface or edges. If you're unsure about cleaning a particular finish, ask us at handover.

Glass alongside windows and doors

Many customers come to Coleraine Glass while having windows or doors fitted by P Black and Son, and some come the other way round. If you're changing more than one thing in your home, tell us at survey and we'll plan the work together so there's one set of visits and one point of contact.

Homes we work on

Our customers are mainly households: replacements in existing homes, renovations, extensions and self-builds. Coleraine Glass supplies products from manufacturers and fits them, so you deal with one team from first visit to final handover.
