Aluminium Sliding Doors: what you need to know

Slim aluminium sliding doors from inside, looking onto a lawn

What sliding doors are

Aluminium sliding doors use large glazed panels that slide past one another on a track. Because they slide rather than swing or fold, they take no room inside or out, and the big panes give you the clearest possible view when closed. We supply and fit bespoke aluminium sliders, including Origin.

Who they suit

Sliders suit homes with a view to make the most of, rooms where swinging doors would get in the way of furniture, and households who want a wall of glass but don't need to open the full width. They're common in coastal homes around Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock.

When to choose sliders

Choose sliding doors if your priority is light and view. If you want the entire wall opening for summer parties, bi-folds may suit better. We fit both and we'll give you a straight recommendation.

Why professional fitting matters

Large sliding panels are heavy. The track has to be perfectly level and supported along its length, or panels become stiff and seals wear. Our fitters set the frame so the panels move with a light push and seal properly when closed.

The cost of waiting

What happens if you leave it

Old sliding patio doors are often the coldest, stiffest part of the house.

Stiff, noisy runners

Worn rollers and dirty tracks make old sliders hard to open, and they eventually stop being used.

Cold glass and condensation

Older units lose heat and attract condensation, which can damage floors at the threshold.

Weak locking

Worn locks on older sliders can leave the door less secure than it should be.

Common mistakes we see

  • Choosing too many panels and losing the big-glass look.
  • Ignoring which side slides, so the opening ends up behind the sofa.
  • Underestimating panel weight when planning the opening and lintel.
  • Buying supply-only and finding nobody to take responsibility if it doesn't run right.

Our process

Five clear steps, start to finish

  1. 01

    Free survey at your home

We visit, measure the opening and talk through how you want the sliding doors to look and work. You get honest advice on sizes, configurations and finishes, at no cost.

  2. 02

    Clear written quote

You receive a written quote setting out the product, the brand, the finish and the fitting. No prices hidden in small print and no pressure to decide on the spot.

  3. 03

    Order with a 65% deposit

Once you're happy, a 65% deposit places the order with the manufacturer. Your products are made to the exact measurements taken at survey.

  4. 04

    Installation by our fitting team

Our fitters remove the old frame, prepare the opening, install the new sliding doors, seal it and check it opens, closes and locks smoothly.

  5. 05

    Completion and handover

We tidy up, walk you through operation and care, and confirm the manufacturer's guarantee. The balance is due on the day of completion, and aftercare call-outs on doors we've fitted are free.

In detail

Options, materials and methods

Everything worth knowing before your survey, so you can make a confident decision.

Two, three and four-panel layouts

A two-panel slider has one fixed and one moving panel. Three and four-panel layouts let you open a wider gap or open from the middle. The best layout depends on your opening width and where you want to walk through.

Sliders versus bi-folds

Sliders give more glass and fewer frame lines; bi-folds give a wider opening. In rooms where the doors are mostly closed, sliders usually win. Where you entertain outdoors often, bi-folds may be worth it.

Thresholds and tracks

Tracks and thresholds must drain water away while keeping the step into the garden comfortable. We'll explain the options for your floor and patio levels.

Finishes

Powder-coated frames come in a wide range of colours, and you can match sliders to aluminium windows elsewhere in the house.

Making the most of a view

If your room looks out over a garden, the countryside or the coast, the frames are what get in the way. Sliding doors use fewer, larger panels than most other door types, so there are fewer vertical lines across the view. In homes around Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock in particular, customers often choose sliders for exactly this reason.

Daily use and safety

Sliding doors are easy to use every day: a light push opens a gap for the dog, the children or fresh air, and the door doesn't swing into the room or catch the wind outside. At handover we show you how the locking works and how to keep the track clean so the panels keep running smoothly for years.

Before your free survey

To get the most from your survey, have a think about a few things beforehand: how you use the room day to day, the look you're aiming for, any colours or finishes you already like, and whether other building or decorating work is planned. Photos of styles you like are useful too. None of this is essential, as we'll guide you through every choice, but it helps us give you a precise aluminium sliding doors quote in a single visit.

What our customers tell us matters

Our one Facebook recommendation so far describes the installation as done professionally, fitted neatly, with a friendly and efficient team. That's exactly what we aim for on every job: turning up when we say we will, protecting your home while we work, fitting carefully, and leaving the room clean. If you've had work done by us, we'd be grateful for a Google review.

Paying for your project

We keep payment simple and transparent. A 65% deposit is taken to order your products from the manufacturer, and the balance is due on the day of completion, once the job is finished. We don't publish prices, because every home is different. Get in touch for a quote. Your written quote will show exactly what you're paying for.

Choosing a brand

We supply and fit products from manufacturers rather than making our own, which means we can recommend what genuinely suits your home. Origin aluminium is our best seller and carries a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. RK Steel is our main steel brand, for internal and external windows and doors. We also supply Palladio and Bel'M. At survey we'll explain the differences in plain terms.

Understanding the guarantee

Because we don't manufacture, the guarantee on your product is the manufacturer's guarantee, and it varies by brand. Origin products carry a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. For other brands, we'll confirm the guarantee for your specific product in writing with your quote, so there are no surprises later.

Getting an accurate quote

Every opening is different, so we don't publish prices. The fastest route to a firm figure is a free survey: we measure, check the condition of the opening and talk through the finish, glazing and hardware you want. You'll get a written quote listing exactly what's included before you decide anything.

Homes we work on

Our customers are mainly households: replacements in existing homes, renovations, extensions and self-builds. P Black and Son supplies products from manufacturers and fits them, so you deal with one team from first visit to final handover.
