Overview

Aluminium French Doors: what you need to know

Black glazed aluminium French doors leading into a garden room, Northern Ireland

What French doors are

French doors are a pair of glazed doors that open from the centre, with no fixed post in the middle when both are open. In aluminium they keep that classic look with slimmer frames and no need for painting.

Who they suit

They suit smaller openings where bi-folds or sliders would be too much, period homes where a traditional look matters, and bedrooms or dining rooms that open onto a balcony or patio.

When to choose French doors

French doors are ideal for openings up to a moderate width. For wider openings, side panels can be added either side, or you might consider bi-folds or sliders instead.

Why professional fitting matters

Two doors meeting in the middle must line up precisely to seal and lock. Our fitters set hinges and frames so the doors close flush and the locking engages cleanly.

The cost of waiting

What happens if you leave it

Tired double doors cause more trouble than people expect.

Doors that drop

On old frames, hinges sag and doors catch on the frame or no longer meet in the middle.

Draughts at the meeting point

Where the two doors meet, worn seals let wind and rain through.

Rotten timber

Older timber French doors can swell and rot, especially on exposed elevations.

Common mistakes we see

  • Choosing inward-opening doors in a tight room.
  • Not considering side panels to fill a wider opening.
  • Forgetting how the doors will be held open on a windy day.
  • Buying a product without a clear manufacturer's guarantee.

Our process

Five clear steps, start to finish

  1. 01

    Free survey at your home

We visit, measure the opening and talk through how you want the French doors to look and work. You get honest advice on sizes, configurations and finishes, at no cost.

  2. 02

    Clear written quote

You receive a written quote setting out the product, the brand, the finish and the fitting. No prices hidden in small print and no pressure to decide on the spot.

  3. 03

    Order with a 65% deposit

Once you're happy, a 65% deposit places the order with the manufacturer. Your products are made to the exact measurements taken at survey.

  4. 04

    Installation by our fitting team

Our fitters remove the old frame, prepare the opening, install the new French doors, seal it and check it opens, closes and locks smoothly.

  5. 05

    Completion and handover

We tidy up, walk you through operation and care, and confirm the manufacturer's guarantee. The balance is due on the day of completion, and aftercare call-outs on doors we've fitted are free.

In detail

Options, materials and methods

Everything worth knowing before your survey, so you can make a confident decision.

Inward or outward opening

Outward-opening doors save room inside; inward-opening doors suit balconies and some sheltered spots. We'll look at your space and weather exposure at survey.

Side panels

Fixed or opening side panels widen the glazed area without making the doors themselves too large and heavy.

Glazing styles

Plain glass suits modern homes; glazing bars can give a more traditional look. We'll show you options at survey or in our showroom by appointment.

Matching windows

Aluminium French doors can be matched with aluminium windows so frames and colours are consistent across the house.

Smaller openings, big difference

Not every home has room for a wall of bi-folds. French doors make a real difference to smaller rooms: a dining room that opens onto a patio, a bedroom with a Juliet balcony, or a garden room. When both doors are open there's no central post in the way, so the opening feels larger than its size.

Holding doors open

On exposed sites, doors left open can catch the wind. We'll talk through how the doors will be held open and how they'll be used day to day, so the hardware you choose suits the way your home works.

Replacing timber French doors

Many of the French doors we replace are timber, swollen and hard to close after years of north coast weather. Swapping to aluminium removes the painting, the sticking and the rot, while keeping the same classic look. We remove the old doors, prepare the opening and fit the new frame, making good around it.

Before your free survey

To get the most from your survey, have a think about a few things beforehand: how you use the room day to day, the look you're aiming for, any colours or finishes you already like, and whether other building or decorating work is planned. Photos of styles you like are useful too. None of this is essential, as we'll guide you through every choice, but it helps us give you a precise aluminium french doors quote in a single visit.

What our customers tell us matters

Our one Facebook recommendation so far describes the installation as done professionally, fitted neatly, with a friendly and efficient team. That's exactly what we aim for on every job: turning up when we say we will, protecting your home while we work, fitting carefully, and leaving the room clean. If you've had work done by us, we'd be grateful for a Google review.

Paying for your project

We keep payment simple and transparent. A 65% deposit is taken to order your products from the manufacturer, and the balance is due on the day of completion, once the job is finished. We don't publish prices, because every home is different. Get in touch for a quote. Your written quote will show exactly what you're paying for.

Choosing a brand

We supply and fit products from manufacturers rather than making our own, which means we can recommend what genuinely suits your home. Origin aluminium is our best seller and carries a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. RK Steel is our main steel brand, for internal and external windows and doors. We also supply Palladio and Bel'M. At survey we'll explain the differences in plain terms.

Understanding the guarantee

Because we don't manufacture, the guarantee on your product is the manufacturer's guarantee, and it varies by brand. Origin products carry a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. For other brands, we'll confirm the guarantee for your specific product in writing with your quote, so there are no surprises later.

Getting an accurate quote

Every opening is different, so we don't publish prices. The fastest route to a firm figure is a free survey: we measure, check the condition of the opening and talk through the finish, glazing and hardware you want. You'll get a written quote listing exactly what's included before you decide anything.

Homes we work on

Our customers are mainly households: replacements in existing homes, renovations, extensions and self-builds. P Black and Son supplies products from manufacturers and fits them, so you deal with one team from first visit to final handover.
