Overview
Aluminium Bi-Fold Doors: what you need to know

What a bi-fold door is
A bi-fold door is a set of glazed panels that fold against each other and stack to one or both sides of the opening. Closed, it's a wall of glass. Open, it removes almost the whole wall between your room and the garden. We supply and fit bespoke aluminium bi-folds, including Origin, our best-selling range.
Who it's for
Bi-folds suit families who use the garden in good weather and want the kitchen or living area to flow straight onto a patio. They're especially popular in new extensions and kitchen renovations, and in homes with a view worth opening up to.
When to choose bi-folds
Bi-folds are the right choice when you want the widest possible clear opening. If you mostly want a big view and only open the doors occasionally, sliding doors may suit better, and we'll tell you honestly which works for your space.
Why professional fitting matters
Bi-folds carry heavy glass panels on a track. If the frame isn't perfectly level and square, panels drag, seals fail and the doors become hard to open. Our fitters have 15 years' experience setting bi-fold frames so the panels glide and seal properly.
The cost of waiting
What happens if you leave it
A poorly chosen or badly fitted bi-fold is an expensive mistake to live with.
Common mistakes we see
- Picking too many panels, leaving lots of frame and less glass when closed.
- Forgetting a traffic door for everyday in-and-out use.
- Not planning the stacking side around furniture and the patio.
- Ordering before the opening is finished and properly measured.
Our process
Five clear steps, start to finish
01
Free survey at your home
We visit, measure the opening and talk through how you want the bi-fold doors to look and work. You get honest advice on sizes, configurations and finishes, at no cost.
02
Clear written quote
You receive a written quote setting out the product, the brand, the finish and the fitting. No prices hidden in small print and no pressure to decide on the spot.
03
Order with a 65% deposit
Once you're happy, a 65% deposit places the order with the manufacturer. Your products are made to the exact measurements taken at survey.
04
Installation by our fitting team
Our fitters remove the old frame, prepare the opening, install the new bi-fold doors, seal it and check it opens, closes and locks smoothly.
05
Completion and handover
We tidy up, walk you through operation and care, and confirm the manufacturer's guarantee. The balance is due on the day of completion, and aftercare call-outs on doors we've fitted are free.

In detail
Options, materials and methods
Everything worth knowing before your survey, so you can make a confident decision.
Panel configurations
Bi-folds can be configured with panels folding all to one side, split to both sides, inward or outward. Common setups range from three panels on a smaller opening to six or more across a wide extension. We'll recommend a layout based on your opening width and how you use the space.
Traffic doors
A traffic door is a single panel that opens like a normal door, so you can let the dog out without folding back the whole set. For most households it's the most-used part of the door, so it's worth planning where it sits.
Thresholds
Thresholds range from standard weather-performance designs to lower options that sit closer to floor level. A lower threshold looks seamless but needs careful planning for drainage. We'll explain the trade-offs for your home.
Bi-folds versus sliding doors
Bi-folds give a wider clear opening. Sliding doors give bigger panes of glass and fewer frame lines when closed. If you rarely open the doors fully, sliders often make more sense. We supply and fit both, so our advice isn't steered by what we sell.
Extensions and renovations
In a new extension the opening can be built to suit the doors. In a renovation we may need to work with an existing opening or your builder may be widening one. Either way, final measurements are taken once the structure is ready.
Before your free survey
To get the most from your survey, have a think about a few things beforehand: how you use the room day to day, the look you're aiming for, any colours or finishes you already like, and whether other building or decorating work is planned. Photos of styles you like are useful too. None of this is essential, as we'll guide you through every choice, but it helps us give you a precise aluminium bi-fold doors quote in a single visit.
What our customers tell us matters
Our one Facebook recommendation so far describes the installation as done professionally, fitted neatly, with a friendly and efficient team. That's exactly what we aim for on every job: turning up when we say we will, protecting your home while we work, fitting carefully, and leaving the room clean. If you've had work done by us, we'd be grateful for a Google review.
Paying for your project
We keep payment simple and transparent. A 65% deposit is taken to order your products from the manufacturer, and the balance is due on the day of completion, once the job is finished. We don't publish prices, because every home is different. Get in touch for a quote. Your written quote will show exactly what you're paying for.
Choosing a brand
We supply and fit products from manufacturers rather than making our own, which means we can recommend what genuinely suits your home. Origin aluminium is our best seller and carries a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. RK Steel is our main steel brand, for internal and external windows and doors. We also supply Palladio and Bel'M. At survey we'll explain the differences in plain terms.
Understanding the guarantee
Because we don't manufacture, the guarantee on your product is the manufacturer's guarantee, and it varies by brand. Origin products carry a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. For other brands, we'll confirm the guarantee for your specific product in writing with your quote, so there are no surprises later.
Getting an accurate quote
Every opening is different, so we don't publish prices. The fastest route to a firm figure is a free survey: we measure, check the condition of the opening and talk through the finish, glazing and hardware you want. You'll get a written quote listing exactly what's included before you decide anything.
Homes we work on
Our customers are mainly households: replacements in existing homes, renovations, extensions and self-builds. P Black and Son supplies products from manufacturers and fits them, so you deal with one team from first visit to final handover.

Questions
Aluminium Bi-Fold Doors FAQs
What guarantee comes with bi-fold doors?+
The guarantee comes from the manufacturer. Origin bi-folds carry a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. We'll confirm the guarantee for whichever bi-fold you choose when we quote.
How many panels do I need?+
It depends on the opening width and the look you want. We'll recommend a layout at your free survey.
Do bi-folds open inward or outward?+
Either. Outward-opening is common because the panels don't take up room inside. We'll talk it through at survey.
Can you fit bi-folds into my existing opening?+
Often, yes. We'll measure and advise whether the existing opening suits or needs adjusting by your builder.
How much does aluminium bi-fold doors cost?+
Every job is priced individually because sizes, finishes and site conditions vary. Your survey and written quote are free and come with no obligation, so you'll know the exact cost before you commit.
How does payment work?+
A 65% deposit is taken to order your products, with the balance due on the day the job is completed.
How long does the whole process take?+
Products are made to order after your deposit is placed. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your quote and agree a fitting date once your order is ready.
Do you offer an emergency service?+
Call us on 028 7071 0015 and we'll tell you honestly how quickly we can help. If we fitted your door, aftercare call-outs are free.
